Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) raises and reshapes the breasts to a more youthful position and contour. As women age, the breasts lose their shape and firmness due to pregnancy, breast feeding, weight changes, and gravity. If desired, the areola can be restored to a smaller size and repositioned to a higher level on the chest. A mastopexy is done under sedation or general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. An implant is often added to restore fullness at the superior aspect of the breast. Incisions are made in a circle around the areola and as a vertical line down the breast. These incisions facilitate removal of the stretched excess skin and allow the nipple to be elevated and centered on the breast mound at a higher level on the chest. Daily activities can be resumed within the first week after surgery. A surgical bra is worn for support for the first two weeks. Return to more strenuous activity can occur in 2-3 weeks.
